Lower Key Stage 2 Newsletter

What an exciting week we have had! On Tuesday the children enjoyed a day of sports with some professional athletes. They were put through their paces on the field, training like they were preparing for the Olympics. The children learned how to start races in a good position to take the lead, and then took part in a sprint against the athletes themselves! We would like to say a big thank you to the Active Team for organising such a great day!

Literacy

This week in Literacy the children have been reading traditional tales such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood. The children have been bringing these stories to life through drama, showing confidence when performing to the class. The children have also been looking at alternative endings for these traditional tales, and thoroughly enjoyed thinking of their own ending for Goldilocks and the Three Bears! Keep up the good work guys!

Numeracy

In numeracy this week, the children have been using written strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We are so impressed with how confident the children are at using these strategies now! We have also been applying these strategies when solving 2 step worded problems. The children have been using the ‘RUCSAC’ method when solving these worded problems, which has really helped them with the accuracy of their answers. Why don’t you ask your child to explain the ‘RUCSAC’ method to you at home?

Topic

This week in topic the children have been painting their African drums. The children carefully looked at their designs from last week, and chose the best one to replicate. We were blown away with their painting skills, and were really impressed with how neat and well-presented they have turned out. Next week the children will be putting their finishing touched onto the drums using marker pens, so make sure all of the detail really stands out! Keep up the good work guys!

Reminders

·        Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in school from Monday-Friday every week. As it is the summer term, all P.E sessions will be outdoors.

·        Please ensure all reading records are brought to school on Monday mornings. This is very important so we can monitor how much reading your children are doing during the week. Thanks for your support.

In year 3/4 you’ll  never guess what we’ve been doing.
We’ve been making african drums for are topic, which is Africa.
We have been transforming two normal cups into outstanding  pieces of music.

How to make a african drum:

1:masking tape the two cups together either way.
2:fill the outside of the cups  in paper mache .
3:wait for it to dry.
4:paint it in a white coat.
5:wait again.
6:paint it in your desired colour.
7:wait for it to dry.
8:make some music.

Amazing African Art!!!

You will never guess what the 3/4 team have been doing in art!
We have  been mashing together different colours with pastels
and wax crayons. We found it very easy and successfully transformed
the pages in our sketchbooks into beautiful settings from the famous
movie Lion king.

Check out the cool picture below…

Netball Club!!!

We love Netball because Netball gives us all a chance to learn a new sport, as well as we have fun with other people. Maddison , one of the girls from Netball quoted “ Before I joined Netball club I had no idea how to play the game . “Another girl from Netball club (Abigail) explained “ I love Netball so much because I learnt new skills.” That is why we love Netball club.

Lower Key Stage 2 Newsletter

The children have shown a wonderfully mature and sensible attitude towards their assessments this week, which has seen them make great steps forward in their learning. We are always so proud with how the children tackle their assessments, demonstrating that they really care about showing off their own learning. On Tuesday 25th June, the children will be taking part in a sporting day therefore are asked to come into school in sports clothes for the entire day.

Literacy

This week in Literacy the children have completed their assessed write to show off their amazing learning from the year. It was great to see a range of audience engaging features within all children’s stories, as well as accurate compound and complex sentences. We were blown away with the children’s use of adjective, powerful verbs and adverbs within their writing. Well done guys, you all should be very proud of yourself.

Numeracy

This week the children have completed their numeracy assessments which involved a mental maths test as well as a written paper. The children thought carefully about which strategies they could use in order to solve different problems, and demonstrated great mental skills on their mental maths test. In addition to their assessments, the children have also been learning about symmetry. The children have been practicing reflecting different patterns and images into a mirror line, ensuring it is an identical match to the first image.

Topic

This week in topic the children have been learning all about the African tribal culture, including their passion for music and dance. The children have been looking at a range of African drums, and then designed their own before making it using paper mache. Next week the children will begin painting and decorating their designs to look like a real African drum. All children have put 100% effort into this DT activity, and so far the drums look like they are going to be a real success. Well done guys for taking such care and attention!

Reminders

·        Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in school from Monday-Friday every week.

Lower Key Stage 2 Newsletter

We have had a lovely first week back after the half term holiday. We were really excited to see the children’s super home learning about Africa and were very impressed with the variety we received, from cooking videos, to documentaries, posters and powerpoints, which showed off all of the skills the children learnt last half term. We were simply blown away! This week also saw us start a new unit in PE; athletics. This will prepare the children for sports day, which will take place Friday 12th July.

Literacy

This half term in Literacy the children will be learning about poetry and play scripts. This exciting unit allows children to be creative, understand deeper knowledge of different poetry styles and develop their performance skills. This week in Literacy, children have been practicing using accurate punctuation in their writing. Next week we will be focusing on extending our ideas into compound and complex sentences.

Numeracy

This week in numeracy, the children have been revisiting their skills for addition and subtraction. We were really impressed with the children’s increased confidence when using strategies like column addition and column subtraction, and were pleased with the children’s independence around using these to solve worded problems involving money. Next week we will be learning about position and direction and using compass skills to navigate each other to different places. We will be learning how to plot and read co – ordinates on a grid and using these to design our own treasure island.

Topic

To kick off the first week of our new topic, Africa, the children have been learning about all of the different countries that are situated within this continent. The children have conducted their own research on a given country, and carefully gathered notes to form a detailed paragraph. The children have also drawn and coloured in their countries flag, which has made a great display. During our art sessions the children have been experimenting with pastels to create different images of the African skyline at various times of the day. We will be building upon these skills each week to create an African landscape scene with various African animals in the full front.

Reminders

·        Can we remind you that children need a full PE kit in school, clearly labelled, from Monday-Friday. Please ensure this consists of a plain white t-shirt as well as shorts or jogging bottoms.

·        As the weather is a lot warmer now please ensure your child has a water bottle at school with them every day.

Have a lovely weekend!

Lower Key Stage 2 Newsletter

What an exciting week we have had! This week, the children have had the pleasure of learning all about how to keep teeth healthy. A local dentist, Mr Reid, kindly sent LKS2 a film clip, explaining the importance of why we should keep our teeth healthy and how to do so. Mrs Shahzad helped the 3/4 children to brush their teeth correctly, ensuring everybody was using the correct techniques.

Literacy

This week the children have been learning how to extend their ideas using a range of conjunctions such as: and, but, because, so, however, therefore and although. In addition to this, the children have also been learning to construct complex sentences. We were really impressed with the children’s ability to identify the main clause from the subordinate clause, which is a tricky concept to understand! Next week the children will be showing off their learning from the whole of the year, and completing an assessed write. We aim to make this a positive experience for all children, ensure that they understand that as long as they try their best, that’s all we could ask for!

Numeracy

In numeracy this week, the children have been learning about direction and positioning. The children become familiar with the different compass points, and started to learn that there are 360 within a circle. The children have been practicing turning around a circle different by degrees, both clockwise and anticlockwise. In addition to this, the children have been learning about coordinates. We have taught the children to go along the corridor and then up the stairs to locate different coordinates. The children have applied this skill by having a fun game of Battleships!

Topic

This week in topic the children have been learning all about the African wildlife, especially the big 5! We all enjoyed watching clips from Lion King, as well as Lewis’s home learning, to help us learn more about the wildlife found in Africa. The children have produced their own Safari Brochures, which share details of the different animals found in different African countries like Kenya and Tanzania. These brochures are so beautifully presented that a selection of these will be going up on the blog for the world to see! Well done guys, you have blown us away!
