Numeracy Bloggers!
Hi there! Eva and Lauren here! We are the 3/4 Numeracy
bloggers and it is our job to tell you about all of the exciting things we have
been learning, week by week. You might even learn a thing or two for yourself!!!
This week we have been learning strategies for adding,
subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We have been solving worded problems
using column addition, column subtraction, the grid method and the bus stop
method. We have been learning these strategies because it is assessment week in
a couple of weeks and we all want to get the best possible results. We have
been solving problems that are level two, three, four and five. We have been
solving money problems too. They are slightly harder because sometimes the
pound sign and decimal point confuse you.
AFRICA!
Last week year 3/4 started to learn all about Africa. We have been creating African flags and researching different countries on the internet. We have also been creating African landscapes in art using pastels to make scenes from the lion king. We all have enjoyed making our flags and watching the lion king for inspiration to create landscapes. We are really looking forward to telling you all about what we have been up to this week in our topic sessions – you will be amazed!

The children did a fantastic
job at representing Robin Hood and we are extremely proud of them. We have had
another exciting week in 3/4 and had a visit from an Indian drummer on Tuesday
afternoon, who showed the children some traditional Indian drumming and taught
us all some exciting dance moves. We all had lots of fun dancing to the beats
and some of us even won some prizes! We would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate all the year 4’s on their wonderful behaviour during our
residential at East Barnby last week. All of
the centre staff commented on how mature and sensible the children all were and
how well everyone worked together as part of a team.
Literacy
We have been looking at
narrative story writing this week and the children have been describing
different settings and characters using a wide range of adjectives and similes.
When describing a different setting the children have used the four senses to
describe what they can see, hear, smell and how they feel. The children then
used these descriptions to write a fantastic opening to a story! We were really
impressed with the great range of adjectives the children are using in their
writing to describe. Why don’t you ask your child to write you a character
description of someone in the family for you to guess who it is?
Numeracy
In numeracy this week the
children have been learning about 3D shapes and their properties. We have had a
great time making lots of different 3D shapes out of art straws for our shape
museum and then recording how many edges, vertices, faces and parallel lines
they have. Next half term we will be looking at how to solve problems involving
money and position and direction.
Topic
This week the children have
learnt all about the Taj Mahal and have had a go at sketching this into their
art books. Why not ask your child to tell you a fact about the Taj Mahal? We
have also used all of the new knowledge we have learnt about India to write
a non-chronological report.
Home
Learning
Next half term our new topic
is Africa . For the children’s home learning we
would like them to research something about this continent to share with the
class when we are back after the holidays. They can present this any way they
choose.
Reminders
·
Next half term our PE unit is athletics,
please ensure your child brings their outdoor PE kit into school every Monday
morning.
·
As the weather is getting warmer please make
sure your child is bringing a water bottle to school every day.
Have a lovely half term!

LKS2 had an exciting visit
on Tuesday afternoon from a Bollywood dancer, who not only taught the children
different Indian style dances, but also told us all some fascinating Indian
mythical stories and performed some traditional Indian songs. A reporter from
the Rothwell Record came to snap a picture of the children performing an Indian
dance routine and we are looking forward to reading the article when it’s out
next month!
Literacy
The children have had lots
of fun during literacy this week becoming real life news reporters. We started
the week hot seating various eye witnesses from different news articles, asking
them to tell us the events of the story from their own perspective. We then
rewrote our News articles from the previous week in the form of a script
including lots of fantastic adjectives to describe. The children then worked
super hard practicing acting these and even brought in props to further enhance
their performances. The final news reports were truly brilliant and the
children really impressed us with their clear and confident performances.
Numeracy
In numeracy this week the
children have been learning all about the relationship between fractions,
decimals and percentages and how to convert between the three. They have also
learnt how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. Why not ask your
child to demonstrate this to you? Next week we are going to be revisiting time,
learning how to successfully read a 24 hour clock and how to read and navigate
around a calendar.
Topic
After the children had a
great time with our Indian dancer on Tuesday we then researched even more
styles of Indian dance and the children have been busy practicing their own
Indian dance routine. We have continued to practice our knowledge of the 7
continents and looked at the locations of the different countries.
Residential
Can all year 4 children who
are going on the residential ensure they meet in the school hall on Wednesday
15th at 8:45 a.m. Can everyone be dressed in their own clothes and
bring a water bottle so they can have a drink on the journey. Can we also
ensure all clothes are clearly labelled so we can return any lost property to
the rightful owners.
Reminders
·
Please ensure your child’s PE kit is kept in
school from Monday-Friday every week.
·
As the weather is getting warmer please make
sure your child is bringing a water bottle to school every day.
Have a lovely weekend!
